November 11, 2022

From Steuben County Fire Coordinator Timothy Marshall:

At approximately 10:20 AM Thursday, November 10th, Jasper Fire department was dispatched to a possible brush fire on Norton Hollow Road in the Turkey Ridge State Forest Land.

Rain from the remnants of Tropical Storm Nicole has suppressed much of the fire. The fire was 95% controlled as of Friday afternoon. NYS DEC Forest Rangers estimate that approximately 370 acres of both public and private land were consumed by the fire.

Those living or traveling along State Route 248 should be aware that the fire will continue to burn, but should not pose a threat due to the current weather conditions. Smoke from the fire will still be visible for several days until the fire is completely extinguished. Forest Rangers will continue to assess the situation over the next several days until the fire is completely out.

Approximately 75 firefighters from the following agencies assisted in this fire:Jasper, Greenwood, West Union, Woodhull, Troupsburg, Andover, Canisteo, South Hornell, North Hornell, Addison and Bath. Arkport and Howard Fire Departments provided Standby coverage. Jasper Ambulance provided EMS Standby at the scene. Additional support agencies were NYS DEC Forest Rangers, Steuben County Office of Emergency Services, NYS DOT, Steuben County Sheriff’s Office and New York State Police.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and remains under investigation.
