Mary P. Flaitz, of Hornell

HORNELL-Mary P. Flaitz, 83, formerly of 277 Canisteo St., passed away Monday morning (Dec. 19, 2016) at Elderwood at Hornell.

A daughter of the late John and Margaret (Clancy) Brody, Mary was born in Hornell on Jan. 6, 1933 and was extremely proud of her Irish heritage. On May 7, 1960, she was married to Antonio “Tony” Madau, who predeceased her on Aug. 20, 1974, after 14 years of marriage. On Sept. 27, 1980, she was married to Jacob “Jake” Flaitz, who survives.

Mary was a lifelong resident of Hornell and was a graduate of St. Ann’s School and Hornell High School, class of 1950.

She was employed by the former Cutler Insurance Agency in Hornell, Aenta CNS, the late Attorney John E. Nugent and retired in 1994 as the corporate secretary for First State Bank in Canisteo.

Mary was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and was a communicant of the former St. Ignatius Loyola Church and later at St. Ann’s Church in Hornell.

She enjoyed volunteering her time for several organizations in Hornell.

Her loving family includes her husband of 36 years, Jake; her two children, Anthony (Patti) Madau of Leroy and Patricia “Trish” (Bud) Paris of Warren, Pa.; her three stepchildren, Jacob (Kelly) Flaitz of Conesus, Timothy Flaitz of Rochester and Thomas (Tonia) Flaitz of Hornell; her eight grandchildren, Antonio and Peter Madau, Haylie, Sydney, Tori, Beau, Teagan and Lexi Paris; her four step-grandchildren, Jacob and Alex Flaitz, Justyn Schumaker and Julia Flaitz; also several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and her first husband, she was also predeceased by her infant son, Michael John Madau; her two brothers, John and James Brody; her sister, Peggy Zuniga and her stepson, Andrew Flaitz.

Calling hours are 5-8 p.m. Thursday at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell. Friends are invited to meet her family at St. Ann’s Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. Friday. Interment will be at St. Ann’s Cemetery, Hornell.
