FROM CHEMUNG COUNTY SHERIFF WILLIAM SCHROM: On May 9, 1989, I received a call from Bonnie Comfort, my close friend Jon Ruhmel’s, mother. Bonnie called to tell me that Jon was tragically killed aboard the USS White Plains in an explosion within the boiler room of the ship. Jon and five of his shipmates lost their lives that day and many others were injured. I developed a close friendship with Jon through middle and high school that remained throughout his service in the United States Navy up until the date of his death.
This year marked a special Memorial Day parade for many of us who knew Jon. A wreath was placed in Jon’s honor at the Woodlawn National Cemetery and I was honored to be asked to be a part of today’s special recognition for him. I was able to reconnect with Jon’s mom and sister and fortunate to meet one of Jon’s best friends from the military, Phil Gunyon, who rode his motorcycle from South Dakota to attend the ceremony.
I’d like to thank everyone who made today possible to include the men and woman of the Sheriff’s Office who were able to participate in today’s parade. A special thanks to the members of our honor guard who created a special moment for Jon’s family by honoring Jon at his gravesite and taking photos with the family.
And of course none of this would have come together had it not been for the efforts and coordination of Marcia Bixby-Dunlap and her husband Ford. Thank you both very much!
