More Endorsements For Judge McCarthy

October 8, 2024

Retired Steuben County Court Judges Bradstreet and Roche endorse Judge Mathew McCarthy in upcoming election.

Corning, NY, October 7,2024 – Upon receiving these endorsements, Judge McCarthy stated, “Having worked beside both Judge Bradstreet and Judge Roche and witnessing their daily dedication to the people of Steuben County I am grateful to receive their support. They know the job and what it takes to administer justice fairly and impartially. I will hold myself to the same high standards as my predecessors.”
Of his first-hand experience with Judge McCarthy, Retired Steuben County Court Judge Peter Bradstreet says, “Before he became the full time Corning City Court Judge, Matt was an attorney handling numerous cases of various types. He often appeared before me, and I had plenty of opportunity to observe his work ethic, his knowledge of the law and his willingness to be reasonable and fair while representing his clients. After he became full time Judge, he was often given County Court and Family Court cases to manage and I never heard any complaints while handling those matters. What I did hear led me to believe he was the same as a judge as he was a lawyer: hard working, knowledgeable and reasonable.
Judge McCarthy also presided over numerous Drug Court sessions, some of which I was able to observe. In those situations, he showed the necessary patience and wisdom in dealing with participants who were contending with issues stemming from various addictions. He was firm when he needed to be, and wise enough to see when a jail sanction was appropriate. He was also supportive and encouraging when it was deserved.
Based on what I have seen and heard, Matt has performed with consistent excellence as an acting County Court and Family Court Judge for ten years. He has proven that he can handle that work by his record of doing it with consistent excellence. I support his candidacy wholeheartedly.”
In his endorsement, recently Retired Steuben County Family Court Judge Philip Roche writes, “Judge McCarthy has the knowledge, experience and judicial temperament necessary for this position. As an Acting Judge, he has done this job and done it well earning him the respect of litigants and his colleagues.”
Judge McCarthy was elected in 2014 as the full-time Corning City Court Judge and has served in a dual capacity as City Court and Acting County and Family Court Judge since January 1, 2015. Prior to his election he had worked for over 9 years as a prosecutor with Steuben County District Attorney’s Office and represented children in Family Court as an Attorney for the Child for over 10 years. He also maintained a private law practice with his father at McCarthy Law in Bath for over 10 years.
Judge McCarthy and his wife, Jolie, are lifelong residents of Steuben County and have lived in Corning for over 20 years. A graduate of Avoca Central School, St. Bonaventure University and Albany Law School he has remained active in numerous civic and social causes supporting our area. Judge Mathew McCarthy will be running on the Republican and Conservative Party lines this fall.
