Nancy K. Bartell, of Hornell

HORNELL – Nancy K. Bartell, 77, of Pearl St., passed away late Friday afternoon (March 8, 2019) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester in the presence of her loving family.

Born in Binghamton, N.Y. on November 23, 1941, she was the daughter of the late Attorney Donald W. and Gladys (Dorion) Kramer. On August 19, 1967, she was married at St. Patrick’s Church in Binghamton to John R. Bartell; they remained married for 51 years. Besides her parents, she was also predeceased by her brother Phillip and sister Susan.

Nancy spent her younger years in Binghamton where she graduated from Binghamton North High School; she graduated from Dunbarton of the Holy Cross in Washington, D.C., and received a Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW) from Fordham University. Her professional career began in Binghamton with the City Welfare Department. In 1969, after coming to Hornell, she became the first individual with a MSW to work at St. James Mercy Hospital as a Discharge Planner and in other capacities in social work at the hospital and outreach clinics. In addition, she taught courses at the former School of Nursing at St. James Mercy Hospital. Also during that time period, she served as a consultant at the former Bethesda Community Hospital in North Hornell and Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville. In later years she was in charge of the Adult Day Care program at St. James. She retired after 37 years with the hospital.

She belonged to several professional organizations including NASW (National Association of Social Workers).

Nancy became the first Woman President of the Hornell Rotary Club and served as Newsletter Editor for the “Hub” for several years. She was also a recipient of the Paul Harris Award.

For many years she was active with the St. James Hospital Auxiliary serving as President, Vice-President, and Secretary (for one year, she held all three positions.) She also was a member of St. James’ Properties Board of Directors for several years.

Nancy was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and was a communicant of St. Ann’s Church and 51-year member of the choir. She loved reading, crossword puzzles, the opera, and musical theater.

Her loving family includes two daughters, Mary (Edward) Shutes of Lima, N.Y. and Patrice (Matthew) Keville of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one son, Kevin (Mary Liz) Bartell of Hornell; two grandsons, Andrew and Matthew Shutes; two sisters, Cecily (Alex) Bodnar of Canandaigua, N.Y. and Carole Kramer of Binghamton, N.Y.; one brother, Chalres (Chalotte) Kramer of Binghamton, N.Y.; also one sister-in-law, Barbara Kramer; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., in Hornell is honored to serve the family of Nancy K. Bartell.

Calling hours are 4–6 p.m. Friday (March 15, 2019, at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell. Friends are invited to join her family at St. Ann’s Church in Hornell where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday (March 16, 2019). Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Town of Fremont.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in her memory to St. James Hospital Foundation, 411 Canisteo St., Hornell or to St. Ann’s Academy, P. O. Box 446, Hornell, N.Y. 14843. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home.
