NYS Dems Win Court Case – Democrats Get To Redraw The NYS House Maps

December 12, 2023

Albany media outlets are reporting that the Democrats have won their lawsuit, to throw out the maps which were drawn up on the orders of Steuben County Judge Pat McAllister. This means, according to the New York Times, that “Democrats will redraw the House Map In New York (State). Statement from Ken Jenkins, Chair of the New York State Independent Redistricting Commission regarding today’s decision from the Court of Appeals: “We are pleased with the Court of Appeals’ decision and look forward to getting back to work with our colleagues as soon as possible to ensure that New York’s voters receive the benefit of the historic redistricting reforms they voted for in 2014.”

From Steuben County Democrat Chair Shawn Hogan: “Obviously the court has spoken, and we’ll see how it plays out,” Hogan said. “The bipartisan commission that was supposed to come up with reapportionment, never did – they both came up with different maps, and then the legislature put forth their plan, and the special master put forth a map that was just for the one election cycle, according to the judge. Hopefully this will not turn into a partisan nightmare, and the two parties will work together, like they are supposed to,” Hogan stated.

From Steuben County GOP Chair Joe Sempolinski: “I’m very disappointed by the court of appeals decision, this is a real loss for fairness. We had a fair, special master-drawn map, now we are going to have a map drawn by the Democrat’s supermajority, which will benefit the Democratic Party. The Democrats did not want to run with fair maps, because they knew they could not win, so they have manipulated the process,” Sempoliski said.
