NYS Dems: Zeldin Is A Trump Guy

October 12, 2022

From The New York State Democrat Chair Jay Jacobs:

As the U.S. House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6 Attack on the U.S. Capitol continues its series of public hearings tomorrow, it’s important to remember that New York Republican Congressman and gubernatorial candidate Lee Zeldin has stood in lockstep with Donald Trump since day one.

When asked earlier this year about the riot at the U.S. Capitol, Zeldin still defended the former president, stating, “President Trump told his supporters to go peacefully and patriotically to the Capitol.”

Not only does Zeldin support the former president’s dangerous MAGA agenda and propel his hate-filled, conspiracy-fueled lies, but he also led efforts against Trump’s impeachment, voted against certifying the 2020 presidential election results, and refused to support the investigation into the January 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

Even today, Zeldin continues to coordinate with far-right extremist groups to boost his campaign for governor.

“Lee Zeldin’s devotion to the far-right fringe of the Republican Party, including Trump loyalists, violent extremists, and conspiracy theorists, proves that he is too extreme for New York,” said New York State Democratic Party Chairman Jay Jacobs. “Lee Zeldin voted with the insurrectionists and Donald Trump to throw out the election results and continues to cast doubt on the legitimacy of our democratic processes, and that alone is reason enough for New Yorkers to reject him come November.”

Here is a short list of Zeldin’s ties to the far right:
• Zeldin voted against certifying the 2020 election, and as recently as this summer, he falsely and recklessly suggested that we’ll “never know” who actually won, providing dangerous fodder for conspiracy theorists and those seeking to undermine confidence in our democratic institutions.
• Zeldin has longstanding ties to a Long Island extremist group known as the Long Island Loud Majority, whose members attended the January 6 insurrection and regularly host extremist rallies that push the Big Lie. Zeldin has even paid the group’s members from his campaign.
• James Robitsek, the founder of the insurrectionist group Setauket Patriots, aided Zeldin’s campaign earlier this year in collecting the petition signatures that eventually became the center of an ongoing election fraud scandal.
• In 2015, Lee Zeldin met with the Long Island Oath Keepers and defended the meeting, saying he has “met with a variety of groups representing all sides of the ideological spectrum.”
• Zeldin voted against the creation of a bipartisan commission to investigate the deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol, and recently dismissed the legitimacy of the Jan. 6 committee and its findings, saying the hearings were not top issues for most Americans.
