Robert A. “Bob” Miller, Sr., of Canisteo

CANISTEO: Robert A. “Bob” Miller, Sr., 91, of South Elm St. passed away Tuesday (August 16, 2016) at his home surrounded with the comfort, care and love of his family, following an extended illness.

Bob was born October 4, 1924 in Dunkirk the son of Otto C. and Alma (Baldwin) Miller. On November 23, 1946 in Fredonia he married the former Ruth Bray who predeceased him in October of 1997. On May 11, 2002 in Canisteo, Bob married Lois B. York who survives and resides in Canisteo.

Bob was a graduate of Brocton Central School and proudly served our country in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946. After the service he attended and graduated from Alfred University with a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in education. He gained further education at both Colgate University and Hope College at Holland, Michigan.

He taught science in Brocton, Canisteo and Dansville Central School districts and retired from Dansville Central School in 1986. Prior to teaching Bob had worked at U.S. Steel in Gary, Indiana for 10 years.

Bob was a member of the First Baptist Church in Canisteo, a member and past Master of Morning Star Lodge #65 F & AM where he received the Dedicated Service award in June of 2007. He was also a member of the Canisteo American Legion and a retired member of the NYS United Teachers Association.

In addition to his wife Lois York of Canisteo, Bob is survived by a son Robert (Vicki Jo) Miller, Jr. of Mineola, TX, two daughters: Joyce (Fred) Crist of Hornell and Susan (Barry) Blackford of Nashville, TN. His step-children: LoAnne (Greg) Bogoshian of Rochester, Bridget (Harry) McInroy of Florida and Darrell (Jo Ellen) York of Canisteo. 11 Grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Bob is also survived by a sister Elizabeth Roadcap of Virginia, sisters-in-law: Joyce O’Brian, Lois Stokes and Marion Bray and brother-in-law Ray Prince.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm Sunday at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St. in Canisteo where a Masonic service will follow calling hours at 8 pm. A funeral service will be held Monday at 11:00 am at the First Baptist Church in Canisteo. Burial and committal services with military honors will be in Bath National Cemetery, Bath, N.Y.

Memorial contributions in Bob’s name may be made to the donor’s choice.
