Robert E. “Bob” Stewart, of the Town of Hartsville

Robert E. “Bob” Stewart, 78, of 4882 Acker Road, Hornell (Town of Hartsville), died Tuesday evening (June 28, 2016) at home surrounded by his loving family.

Robert was born January 27, 1938 and was the son of Richard and Julia (Randall) Stewart.

A native and life resident of Hornell, Bob was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1955). After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the US Navy, serving his country from 1955 – 1959.

After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Bob worked for the Erie Railroad for several years. In the mid 1960s, Bob began working at The Evening Tribune as a circulation director, a position he held for nearly 20 years. For approximately 20 years, Bob and his wife, Carol, owned and operated the Sunset Inn.

Bob loved dogs and spent most of his adult life training and handling dogs for competition. He traveled throughout the United States and Canada competing in field trials in the grouse woods and won several national championships. During the winter months, Bob enjoyed training his dogs in Texas. He also enjoyed fly fishing at home, as well as in Arizona and New Mexico. Bob was an avid New York Yankees fan, and he was usually seen wearing his Yankees cap. However, Bob most enjoyed spending time with family and cheering on his four grandsons at all of their sporting events.

In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his brother, Richard “Gary” Stewart.

Robert was married in 1959 to his beloved wife of 57 years, Carol Pomeroy, who survives. Also surviving are his daughters, Kelly (Michael) Clair of Hornell and Laurie (Scott) Smith of Hornell; four grandsons, Christopher (Samantha) Clair of Canisteo, Kyle (Jessica) Clair of Hornell, Matt Smith and Luke Smith of Hornell; three great-grandchildren, McKenna Clair, and twins Benjamin and Henry Clair; sisters-in-law, Betsy Pomeroy and Margi Pomeroy; several nieces and nephews.

The family of Robert E. Stewart will receive friends on Friday from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY where funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday. Burial with military honors will be in Hornell Rural Cemetery.

Bob’s family requests that memorial contributions in his name be made to Hornell Humane Society, 7649 Industrial Park Road, Hornell, NY 14843 or to the Hornell Public Library, 64 Genesee St., Hornell, NY 14843. Memorial forms will be available at the Dagon Funeral Home.
