Salvatore P. Brundu, of Hornell

HORNELL-Salvatore P. Brundu, 88, formerly of Mays Ave., entered into rest peacefully Saturday afternoon (Feb. 3, 2018) at Elderwood at Hornell.

Born in Hornell on Apr. 3, 1929, he was a son of the late John and Anita (Madduca) Brundu. On July 1, 1951 he was married in Tyrone to the former Frances R. Bebout, who predeceased him on Mar. 10, 2008 after 56 years of marriage. Besides his parents and wife, he was also predeceased by his daughter and son-in-law, Jacqueline and William Schleyer and his sister, Jennie Grillo.

A lifelong resident of Hornell, Sal attended Hornell High School where he was a member of the Hornell Red Raiders football team and was inducted into the Hornell High school Sports Hall of Fame in 2006. He proudly served his country with the U.S. Army Company B 11th Airborne Infantry Regimen during the Korean War from 1951 to his honorable discharge in 1953 and was a recipient of the Parachute Badge. He also played football while serving in the military.

Sal was employed as a professional firefighter for the City of Hornell for 38 years before he retired.

He was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and was a communicant of St. Ann’s Church in Hornell. He was a lifetime member of the Arthur H. Cunningham American Legion Post No. 440, the Amvets Post No. 245 and the Carducci Lodge, Sons of Italy in Hornell. He was also a former member of the Cpl. J.J. Mooney VFW Post 2250, the Hornell Moose Lodge No. 210 and the Hornell Eagles.

An avid hunter and fisherman, Sal loved spending time with his wife, Frances and family at his cottage on Keuka Lake and spending the winter months in Florida. He was an extremely talented carpenter and especially enjoyed woodworking and wood carving. He will be remembered most of all for his generosity and his willingness to always help members of his family as well as friends and neighbors.

His loving family includes his two grandchildren, Kelly (Lee) Green of Dansville and John (Julie) Schleyer of Glenwood, N.Y.; his three great-grandchildren, Carli Green and Daniel and Jack Schleyer; his sister, Stella Patrick of Hornell; his three brothers, Lucciano (Eleanor) Brundu, Peter (Sandy) Brundu and George (Sally) Brundu all of Hornell; also his many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calling hours are 4-7 p.m. Thursday (Feb. 8, 2018) at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St. in Hornell. Relatives and friends are welcomed to meet the family at St. Ann’s Church in Hornell where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday (Feb. 9, 2018). Committal prayers and interment, with military honors, will follow at St. Mary’ Cemetery, Town of Fremont.

The United States flag and the Army flag will proudly fly at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc. in recognition of Sal’s military service.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to the Hornell City Firefighters Association, 108 Broadway, Hornell, N.Y. 14843. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home.
