Schumer: Some Veterans Need To Be Able To Get Both Retirement And Disability

November 21, 2023

Senator Chuck Schumer is working on passing a law to allow members of the military to be able to get a retirement and disability at the same time. “I stood with vets in the North Country to push for the Major Richard Star Act to finally allow our combat-injured vets to receive disability compensation and retirement pay at the same time,” Schumer said, late this morning. “This is a bipartisan solution to rectify this injustice.”

From CBO.Gov: The Major Richard Star Act would permit certain veterans with qualifying combat-related disabilities who are eligible for military retirement and veterans’ disability compensation to receive the full amount of both of those benefits.

From Congress.Gov:
This bill provides that combat-disabled uniformed services retirees with fewer than 20 years of creditable service may concurrently receive, without reduction, veterans’ disability compensation and retired pay or combat-related special compensation.
