October 22, 2018

Statement From The O’Mara For State Senate Campaign:

The New York State AFL-CIO has endorsed State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C,I-Big Flats) in his bid for re-election to represent the state’s 58th Senate District. The New York State AFL-CIO, the largest state labor federation in the nation, represents 2.5 million members.
In a letter informing O’Mara of the endorsement, AFL-CIO President Mario Cilento highlighted the organization’s confidence that O’Mara “will stand with us in the fight to strengthen and build new ladders to the middle class…On behalf of 2.5 million union members, it is my pleasure to inform you that New York State AFL-CIO has endorsed your campaign for State Senate.”

O’Mara said, “Greater economic security for middle class workers and their families is absolutely job number one and I’ve done my best to always continue to fight and stand up for a stronger future for the backbone of the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions. I greatly appreciate the confidence expressed by the state AFL-CIO that I stand behind their members and the needs of the middle class for a state government that’s focused on lower taxes, less government spending, job growth, and more effective, responsible actions.”
The support from the State AFL-CIO support is the latest in a string of grassroots labor endorsements O’Mara has received for his re-election. He has been endorsed by the NYS Civil Service Employees Association (CSEA), which represents over 300,000 active and retired public- and private-sector employees statewide, including more than 4,500 CSEA members within the 58th Senate District. The association represents employees of New York State and its counties, towns, villages, school districts, library systems, and other public institutions. It also represents a growing number of private-sector workers and approximately 50,000 retirees. O’Mara has also been endorsed by the NYS Public Employees Federation (PEF) and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees of New York State (AFSCME New York State). PEF represents more than 50,000 professional, scientific, and technical employees across the state, including nurses, parole officers, road and bridge workers, and employees at local correctional facilities, youth centers, psychiatric centers and other health care facilities. AFSCME New York represents over 400,000 members from six affiliates – including thousands across the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions in the 58th Senate District.

The 58th District O’Mara represents encompasses all of Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben and Yates counties, and a portion of Tompkins County (the city and town of Ithaca, and the towns of Enfield, Newfield and Ulysses).
O’Mara was first elected to the Senate in 2010.

Throughout his service in the Senate, O’Mara has become recognized as a leading voice in support of state policies to spark a revitalization of the Upstate New York economy through tax cuts, regulatory reform, mandate relief, and a revitalization of the manufacturing sector. He currently serves as Chairman of the Senate Environmental Conservation Committee, in addition to serving as a member of nine other Senate committees and on the following special Senate task forces: Heroin and Opioid Addiction, Lyme and Tick-Borne Diseases, and Workforce Development.
