FROM THE CANISTEO FIRE COMPANY: At approximately 250 pm on June 7th Canisteo Fire was dispatched to the Canisteo River near County Route 119 and County Route 27 for a report of people including a small child in the water needing assistance. Members of the Canisteo Fire Dept, New York State Police, and the Canisteo Police Dept responded and after a search that included traveling through rugged terrain and heavy brush were able to locate the subjects on the shore of an island in the river. The first responders were able to get the subjects to the south shore of the river and then travel through the rugged terrain to a point where the Bath Fire Dept Swift Water Team was able to pick them up and transport them to the north side of the river. The child was transported by Canisteo Ambulance and Steuben EMS to St James Hospital for treatment. The Canisteo Fire Dept would like to thank the Bath Fire Dept, North Hornell Fire Dept, Steuben County ALS, Canisteo Police, Steuben County Sheriff’sOffice, and New York State Police. The incident is under investigation by the New York State Police.
FROM THE BATH VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPT: On Saturday, 6/7/25 the Bath Fire Swift Water Team was dispatched to Canisteo to assist in an ongoing rescue mission to retrieve people from an island in the river. Around 2:44pm there was reports of a child stuck in a tube in the river, this turned out to be a group of people stuck on an island and needed to be retrieved by boat to be brought across the raging river waters to land. Bath Swift Water Technicians made entry into the river upstream from the incident via boat and worked their way down to the stranded people. Making a total of 3 trips across the river, all people were rescued successfully with no injuries. ALL UNITS were cleared around 6:41pm.
