Sheriff Allard Reports That Registered Sex Offenders Are Being Scammed

March 18, 2025

Sheriff Jim Allard reports that the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office has been made aware of fraudulent activity involving registered sex offenders being contacted by an individual claiming to be a member of the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office.

The investigation into this incident has found that the scammer is advising individuals that a warrant has been issued for their arrest due to a missed DNA submission. The scammer then requests a sum of money to be sent to them through a variety of non-traditional means in order to have the warrant vacated.

The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office NEVER solicits money from the public to vacate warrants. If you believe you are the target of fraudulent activity, do not provide money to an unknown and unvetted individual and contact law enforcement.
