Sheriff Jim Allard made a request yesterday, for the county to hire 13 more deputies, a chief deputy, and two new sargeants, over a five year period, at a cost of three million dollars, over that five years. The sheriff says, crime is up, there are less law enforcement officers and Steuben County is a very large place. Sheriff Allard also says, there are less full time police departments around. “Previously, there were seven full time police departments in Steuben County,” Allard said. “Wayland was full time, Canisteo was full time, Addison was full time, Painted Post was full time, Bath, Corning and Hornell, were all full time. Currently, only Bath, Corning and Hornell are full time agencies.”
The sheriff would like to have two deputies, per zone. A zone is considered to be, 460 square miles of roads. He says he often hears town officials ask for more deputies, doing more patrols in areas around Steuben County.
