Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard is issuing an urgent warning to the public following a
recent surge in scam attempts targeting individuals across all demographics – not just the elderly.
These scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated, with perpetrators often
impersonating law enforcement officers from the Sheriff’s Office and other government
agencies. The fraudulent calls or messages may include:
Claims of missed court dates or warrants requiring immediate payment
Demands for gift cards or wire transfers as payment for fines
Threats related to sex offender registration compliance
Warnings that personal information will be released if demands are not met
In some cases, scammers may even spoof phone numbers to make their calls appear
legitimate. “These criminals are preying on fear and confusion,” said Sheriff Allard. “It’s
important for the public to understand that law enforcement will never contact you by phone
to demand payment of any kind.”
Tips to Protect Yourself:
Do not provide personal or financial information over the phone
Do not purchase or send gift cards as a form of payment
Hang up and contact the agency directly using a verified phone number
Report suspicious calls to local law enforcement or the Internet Crime Complaint
Center.
