State Of Emergency For Steuben County Until Further Notice – And Addison Has Been Evacuated

August 19, 2021

From Steuben County Office Of Emergency Services Director Tim Marshall:

At 10:53pm on Wednesday night, Steuben County ordered the evacuation of the Southside of the Village of Addison adjoining Tuscarora Creek. Before that, the National Weather Service provided estimates that flooding of Tuscarora Creek would exceed historic levels, potentially topping the levy.

A Red Cross emergency shelter has been established at the Corning-Painted Post High School at 201 Cantigney St, Corning, NY. (Wlea Editors note: Canisteo has a shelter at the fire hall, 14 South Main Street. That’s from Canisteo-Greenwood School Superintendent Tom Crook. Also, Hornell High School is not going to start their Band Camp, until noon today, because of the travel ban in other towns in Steuben County.)

Due to widespread flash flooding, Steuben County has declared a State of Emergency, prohibiting travel in the Towns of West Union, Woodhull, Troupsburg, Tuscarora, Greenwood, Canisteo, Hornellsville, and Jasper.

Residents must stay off the road until further notice to ensure that emergency vehicles and public works equipment can respond to the emergency. Highway, Police, and Fire Officials are out and working. Please do not call 911 unless it is for a true emergency.

This State of Emergency will remain in effect until further notice.
Steuben County Meals on Wheels says, there will be no deliveries today, due to flooding at their Bath office.
