Hornell used a six-run 1st inning as they defeated the Olean Oilers 10-7 on Thursday night. The win improves the Steamers to 19-14 on the year.

After Braden Consaul (USC Upstate) held the Oilers scoreless in the 1st, Hornell put together a big 1st inning. Bryson Rigsby (Webster) led off the game with a single. One batter later, Paxton Hughes (Trevecca Nazarene) singled to make it 1st and 3rd. Rigsby scored on a wild pitch and Hughes scored on a RBI single to left by Jordyn Smith (Oklahoma Wesleyan). Three batters later Max Schmarder (Tusculum) hit a two-run triple over the right fielder’s head to make it 4-0. Rigsby drew a bases loaded walk and Jack Loftus (Western New England) scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-0.

Olean scored a run in the 3rd and another run in the 4th. In the bottom of the 4th, Hughes collected a RBI double to score Rigsby.

The Oilers got another run in the 5th but BJ Arnold (Mercyhurst) answered with a RBI single to right.

Both team scored twice in the 6th. Hughes scored on a throwing error and Colton Burd (Indiana U of PA) followed with a RBI single.

Olean didn’t go away. They scored one in the 8th and another in the 9th but stranded the bases loaded when Brody Burdett (Alfred State) struck out the final batter of the game.

Consaul pitched six solid innings to earn the win. He allowed four earned runs and struck out eight. Burdett recorded the save with three innings of work. He allowed a pair of runs and struck out four.
