The Steuben County Public Health Department and partners are sharing updated overdose data for June: 42 overdoses were reported. One overdose was fatal, and 12 instances of Narcan administration were noted.
“We are now halfway through the year and are trending above 2022’s reports in overdoses and fatalities,” said Public Health Director, Darlene Smith. “I strongly encourage those who are using substances or have loved ones who do to equip themselves with available resources. Narcan is available for free, and there are many services in the area that can offer support for those who wish to stop using substances.”
In June, nine of Steuben’s overdose records cited opioids as a suspected drug causing the overdose. Twenty-one overdose records did not note a specific substance or were not able to be accessed for full review, and the remaining 12 records indicated another substance was suspected to be the cause of overdose. Other reported substances included prescription drugs, methamphetamines, marijuana, alcohol and others.
Narcan training is available at https://www.steubencountyny.gov/narcan or in person training can be scheduled by calling Steuben Public Health at 607-664-2438 or reaching out to the Steuben Prevention Coalition’s Opioid Committee.
