Steuben County Overdose Data For Jan, 2024

February 23, 2024
By Ryan Styker, Steuben County Public Health

The Steuben County Public Health Department and partners are sharing updated overdose data for January 2024: 12 overdoses were reported, 0 fatalities were reported, and 5 instances of Narcan administration were cited.

“We are pleased to have seen a significant decrease in the number of suspected overdoses beginning in 2024 compared to previous years” said Public Health Director, Darlene Smith. “However, continued opioid use, coupled with the increased prevalence of fentanyl, underscores the need for ongoing support from Steuben County Public Health and its partners. Free Narcan training is readily available in the county and urge anyone who may need the support to seek help.”

In January, two of Steuben’s overdose records cited opioids as a suspected drug causing the overdose. Two overdose records did not note a specific substance or were not able to be accessed for a full review, and the remaining 8 records indicated another substance was suspected to be the cause of an overdose. Other reported substances included alcohol, methamphetamine, prescription drugs, and others.

Narcan training is available at https://www.steubencountyny.gov/narcan or in-person training can be scheduled by calling Steuben Public Health at 607-664-2438 or reaching out to the Steuben Prevention Coalition’s Opioid Committee.
