Steuben County’s Black Balloon Day Announcement

March 6, 2025
By Steuben Co Spokesman Eddie VanStine

BLACK BALLOON DAY: WE WILL NOT STAND POWERLESS

Today, we raise black balloons—not just as a symbol of loss, but as a declaration that we refuse to let addiction steal any more of our brothers, sisters, parents, children, and friends.

Too many lives have been cut short. Too many families have faced an empty seat at the table, a phone call that never comes, a heartbreak that never heals. Addiction does not discriminate. It does not care about age, race, status, or wealth. But neither does love. Neither does strength. Neither does hope.

We do not stand here powerless. We stand as warriors. As advocates. As voices for those who can no longer speak. We fight for change, for awareness, for resources, for a world where no family has to endure this pain.

To those battling addiction: You are not beyond saving. To those in recovery: We are proud of you—keep fighting. To those grieving: Your loved one is not forgotten.

We will not be silent. We will not give up. We will not let this fight be in vain.
