Superintendent Crook: On The Topic Of Regents Testing

October 6, 2026

CANISTEO, NY – Canisteo-Greenwood School Superintendent Tom Crook said last night at the CG BOE meeting, that after the 2026-2027 school year, Regents exams will no longer be required for students to earn a diploma in New York State. We emailed the CG Superintendent and asked for more information about the Regents testing.

Here is Superintendent Crook’s reply: “Beginning after this school year, Regents exams will no longer be required for students to earn a diploma in New York State. However, Regents exams will still be available for students who wish to earn a Regents seal on their diploma, and they may continue to play a role in certain graduation pathways that districts choose to offer. This shift recognizes that student success cannot always be measured by a single assessment. As part of the NY Inspires initiative, schools will be responsible for identifying rigorous competencies and assessments that demonstrate students have mastered the knowledge and skills necessary for graduation. While the system is changing, our commitment to high standards is not. The goal remains the same: ensuring every student graduates prepared for college, careers, and life after high school.”
