The Natural Gas Ban Will Not Go Into Effect On Jan 1

November 13, 2025

The natural gas ban in new buildings seven stories high and smaller, which was scheduled to go into effect on January 1, has been delayed.  Because there are court proceedings and an appeals process going on, the state has stipulated to the court that it would not move forward and implement the All-Electric Buildings Act until the Appeals process plays out.

FROM MAYOR JOHN BUCKLEY: “This is welcome news for residents, builders, municipalities, and economic development in general.”

FROM ASSEMBLYMAN JOE SEMPOLINSKI: “Anything that would delay the Electric Buildings Act is a good thing”.

FROM ASSEMBLYMAN PHIL PALMESANO:  “I am grateful that the state has temporarily come to its senses and has agreed to delay the implementation of the All-Electric Buildings Act, which was set to take effect in January 2026. The act, which bans all new construction from having natural gas hookups, was flawed and dangerous from the word go. A few months ago, I traveled the state to warn about the state’s radical energy policies and to let people know about the lack of affordability, reliability, feasibility and energy choice in the state energy polices being advanced by the governor and Democrats in Albany. There is no doubt in my mind that if this law is allowed to be implemented, it will result in higher costs for new home and building construction, continued skyrocketing electric bills, loss of good-paying jobs and a dangerous jeopardization of the reliability of our state’s energy grid. All this, while doing nothing to meaningfully make an impact on global emissions, as New York only contributes 0.4% of global emissions, while China contributes 30%, has 1,000 coal plants and is building more every week. And while the fight to end New York’s Green New Deal (CLCPA) is not over, we can take a temporary sigh of relief knowing this particular part of it will not be implemented at this time,” said Palmesano.
