Steuben County celebrated the 250th anniversary of both New York and America on Saturday, September 5, with the Steuben 250 History Concert and Fair at Pulteney Square in Bath.
Organized by the Steuben County Historian’s Office and the Steuben County Historical Society, the free public celebration brought history to life through military reenactments, living history demonstrations, musical performances, local food and vendors, and opportunities for visitors of all ages to experience the history of the nation and the region.
Pulteney Square was transformed into an interactive historic timeline featuring Revolutionary War military encampments from the 24th Connecticut Militia and Hoisington’s Rangers. Visitors witnessed demonstrations, including blank musket firing and a Civil War-era cannon demonstration, while also experiencing a living history blacksmith, a traditional sutler mercantile stand and 19th-century ice cream prepared by Churn of the Century Ice Cream.
Historical figures including Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and local pioneer legend The Publick Universal Friend interacted with visitors throughout the day, providing an educational and engaging experience for the community.
The celebration also featured a musical performance by the Cantata Singers, who presented “Sing Democracy 250,” a musical arrangement created specifically to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the American experiment.
Local food and comfort food vendors, including Chris B’s Chicken BBQ, Ray’s Mobile Food, JR’s Back Alley BBQ, Twin Kiss Ice Cream Kruiser and Putnam’s “Fair Food” Treats, were also on hand throughout the celebration.
Steuben County Chair Kelly Fitzpatrick said “Steuben County Historian Griffin Bates organized a spectacular
event to celebrate the 250th birthday of America. We are grateful for his hard
work. We thank the participants, the spectators, and mother nature for
providing us with a beautiful day”.
The Steuben 250 celebration was sponsored by the NY 250th Commemorative Commission.
The Steuben County Historian’s Office is responsible for collecting, preserving and sharing resources documenting Steuben County’s rich historical legacy, including maps, historical records and genealogical archives. The office operates out of the Steuben County History Center on the main floor of the Magee House at the intersection of West Morris Street and Cameron Street in Bath.
