Mansfield Beats Dodgers In Friday’s Double Header

July 10, 2021

The Mansfield Destroyers won both halves of a NYCBL doubleheader on Friday. The Destroyers defeated the Hornell Dodgers 7-1 in the completion of a suspended game and then rallied for four runs in the 7th to win the nightcap 10-7.

Mansfield entered Friday’s action with a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd as play resumed from a suspended game from June 29th. They added to their lead with single runs in the 3rd and 4th before the Dodgers scored their lone run of the game in the 6th when Christopher Penna (Rhodes) doubled and came home on a RBI single by Jack McDonald (Wilmington). The Destroyers added two insurance runs in the 9th.

Penna was the lone Dodger with multiple hits finishing 2 for 3. Scott Borgman (Calvert Hall/Wilmington) pitched five innings of relief and allowed six hits and two earned runs while walking one and striking out three.

Neither offense could get much going until the 3rd. The Destroyers scored in the top of the 3rd but the Dodgers answered with three of their own in the bottom of the inning. Wade Kelly (Coastal Carolina) hit a RBI groundout, Aaron Mann (Drury) followed with a RBI single, and Penna hit a triple off the right field fence to score Mann.

Mansfield took back the lead with a five run 4th inning but the Dodgers chipped away. In the 4th, Kelly hit a sac fly and the Dodgers tied it in the 5th when Noah Fasso (Hudson Valley CC) hit a two-run double over the right fielder’s head. Mitch Daniels (Webster) sac fly fielder’s choice scored Tim Holler (Alfred State) to make it 7-6 Dodgers.

The game remained 7-6 until the top of the 7th when the Destroyers collected four runs on four hits to take a 10-7 advantage. Matt Kahn, who pitched a scoreless 6th, retired the Dodgers in order in the 7th to end the contest.

Fasso was 2 for 3 with a pair of RBI, Daniels was 2 for 3 with a RBI while Mann, Penna and Jordyn Smith (Grambling) were each 2 for 4.

Today’s games were originally scheduled to be played at Mansfield but were moved to Maple City Park due to unplayable field conditions at Shaute Field. The two teams will now play a DH on Monday at Mansfield starting at 2:30 p.m.

The Dodgers head to the NYCBL Jamboree on Saturday for a pair of games. They take on the Syracuse Spartans at 1 p.m. at Gutchess Sports Complex and the Syracuse Salt Cats at 4 p.m. at Wallace Field on the campus of SUNY Cortland.
