Fatal Balloon Accident in Nunda

State Police out of Livingston County are reporting that on Friday evening at 9:10pm, officials with the New York State Police in Geneseo investigated a fatal hot air balloon accident near Picket Line Road in the Town of Nunda. Officials say that the hot air balloon handler, Ryan Almeter, 34, was restraining the basket allowing passengers to get off, when wind caused the balloon to take flight. According to state police, the balloon reached approximately 100 feet, when Almeter let go of the basket and fell to his death.

Troopers say that the FAA and the NTSB were contacted by State Police, and the investigation is continuing.
UPDATE: 11:35am – Time Warner Cable News reports that Ryan Almeter was a teacher a Keshequa High School.
