FROM THE CANISTEO-GREENWOOD CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT: We’re excited to share that with the arrival of warmer spring weather; work has begun on improving the Canisteo Living Sign. Currently, a contractor is carefully trimming the trees that form the letters. This work will help make the letters more defined while also reducing their height. As many of you know, the white pines planted in 2014 have grown to over 15 feet tall, which are well beyond what is ideal for maintaining the sign’s visibility. Since these trees can eventually reach heights of 30 feet or more, the goal is to bring them down to a more manageable size and help limit future growth. As trimming continues, you may notice some gaps where trees have not survived. Plans are in place to replace those with 6–8 foot trees, which will grow in and restore the sign over time. The letters “C” and “S” will likely take a bit longer to fully fill back in.
We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to maintain and preserve the “World Famous Living Sign” for years to come.
