FROM HORNELL DEPUTY MAYOR JESSICA CLEVELAND: The Board of Public Safety has unanimously approved the appointments of two new patrolmen to the Hornell Police Department at their August meeting. Taylor Waite has been appointed as a patrolman, and Derek McCumiskey as a provisional patrolman. Their appointments are effective immediately.
A 2011 graduate of Genesee Valley Central, Waite also holds and Associate’s Degree in Social Behavior from Alfred State College. She is currently an officer with the Norwich Police Department. With all necessary training and credentials in place, she is ready to transition to the Hornell Police Department and start at full capacity. “Taylor interviewed extremely well, and I believe she will be a great fit for our department. She toured our facility, was impressed with what she saw, and expressed her excitement to begin working with us,” noted Chief Ted Murray. “Taylor’s experience as a police officer, her family’s history in law enforcement, and her maturity in decision-making all stand out. Having a female officer also enhances our capabilities, especially when processing arrests involving female prisoners,” added Chief Murray.
McCumiskey’s appointment is provisional, as he is currently enrolled in the Police Academy at Alfred State College. Upon completing the academy, he will begin field training, and subsequently will take the Civil Service exam before being appointed full-time. A 2020 graduate of Hornell High School, McCumiskey has strong ties to the community. “Derek is a prime example of a local youth who has worked hard to achieve his goal of giving back to his community through law enforcement. He has deep roots here and demonstrates excellent decision-making and a strong work ethic. We look forward to his work for our department,” stated Chief Murray.
Mayor John Buckley expressed his support for the appointments, stating, “What impresses me most about Taylor and Derek is their commitment to public service. In today’s climate, finding individuals willing to step into the challenging, and often dangerous, role of a police officer is increasingly difficult. We’re fortunate in the City of Hornell to have these two exceptional candidates. We look forward to their service and appreciate their dedication to our community.
