W. Dean Bertch, of Canisteo

Canisteo-W. Dean Bertch, 77, of 11 Russell Street, passed away peacefully, Monday (December 29, 2014) at his home.

 

Born in Troupsburg, March 22, 1937, the son of Walter A. and Gladys Scott Bertch, he had resided in Canisteo since 1950. He was a graduate of Canisteo Central School, Class of 1956, and for several years was the owner of Canisteo Furniture and Appliance. Dean served in the New York Army National Guard in Hornell, and was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church of Canisteo where he served as deacon and trustee. In later years, he was active in the maintenance of the church. He was a member and past president of the Maple City Lions Club, the Carducci Lodge, Sons of Italy in Hornell, the Canisteo Fire Department and Ambulance Corp, the Canisteo American Legion Post, and was a school bus driver for the Canisteo –Greenwood School District. Following his retirement, Dean was employed at Brown & Powers Funeral Homes, where he maintained all of their automobiles as well as the lawns and flowers. Dean was always willing to help out anyone in need, and was never afraid to mow a lawn for anybody who needed it.

 

He was predeceased by his parents, his first wife, Linda Wells Bertch, and his second wife, Kathy Fry Bertch.

 

He is survived by his friend and companion, Connie Welty of Canisteo, his daughters, Laurie Bertch (Roger Beyea) of Canisteo and Vicky Fry of Canisteo, his sons, Andrew (LeSandra) Bertch of Canisteo, and Daniel Fry of Rochester, his sisters, Nena Kelley of Troupsburg and Arnet Warriner of Arkport. Six grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

The family will be present to receive friends on Friday, January 2, 2015, from 1-3 and 5-7 PM at the Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 6 Spruce St., Canisteo. Funeral services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Canisteo on Saturday, January 3, 2015 at 11:00 AM. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Canisteo.
