Former State Senator Cathy Young is saying on Twitter, that if a 1999 law that she worked on, called Kendra’s Law was followed, that the anti-Semitic attack that happened in Monsey, would not have happened. “Why wasn’t Kendra’s Law used? He would’ve gotten treatment and this terrible violence would not have occurred,” the former senator noted on her Twitter page on Monday.
Kendra’s Law forces potentially violent mental patients, to get medical help. It was passed in 1999 by the state legislature, and is named after Kendra Webdale, a 32 year old woman who was pushed in front of a passing subway train in New York City, by a man with schizophrenia, who was untreated. It was in March of 2018, that then Senator Cathy Young got Kendra’s Law, made permanent. After it was passed in 1999 and prior to March 2018, Kendra’s Law had to be repeatedly renewed.
