Alfred L. Chapman, formerly of Hornell

HORNELL – Alfred L. Chapman, 89, a resident of the Bath VAMC formerly of Cleveland Avenue passed away peacefully Friday (May 16, 2014) at Bath VAMC.

Born in Hornell, May 12, 1925, the son of Roblee and Fern Chapman, he was a lifelong area resident. He was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish, and a communicant of St. Ann’s Church. He had served twice in the US Navy once during World War II from 1942-1945, and a second time during the Korean Conflict from 1949-1954. Al had previously worked as a police officer for the City of Hornell, and later was the owner and operator of Chapman’s Center in North Hornell for many years. He enjoyed woodworking, leather crafting, and cross stitching. Al was also a member of the Hornell K of C and was also a founding father of the Finger Lakes Chapter of the K of C.

He was predeceased by his parents, as well as his wife Lucy DeSanto Chapman in 2001, whom he married on September 10, 1949, he was also predeceased by his sister Ramona Brody.

He is survived by his son Robert (Pamela) Chapman of Hornell, 2 sisters Decla Phelps of CA, and June of Fla, 6 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

The family will be present on Tuesday, May 20, 2014,from 2-4 & 7-9pm at the Bender – Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 354 Canisteo St, Hornell. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St Ann’s Church on Wednesday at 11:00 AM. Burial will be at St Mary’s Cemetery, Fremont, with military honors.
