Alvy J. Lucas, 89, of 8264 Route 961F, Arkport, died Tuesday morning (April 29, 2014) at Hornell Gardens, following a brief illness.

Born in Olean, NY on December 3, 1924, he was the son of Alvy & Minnie (Hoffmire) Lucas.

Alvy grew up in Olean where he attended Olean High School. During WWII, Alvy left high school to join the US Navy. He served his country from 1942 – 1946 during the Pacific Theater of Operations as a photographer, pharmacist’s mate, hospital apprentice and surgical technician.

During his adult life, Alvy resided in many locations, including Philadelphia, Buffalo, Rochester, Arkport, Wayland, DeRuyter and Virginia, returning to the Arkport area about a year ago. He had been employed for many years as a sheet metal worker for Local #46 in Rochester on numerous jobs.

He was a lifelong member of the American Legion with memberships in Honeoye, DeRuyter, Truxton and Wayland where he served as commander. Alvy also served as commander for the 6th District of New York State. He was a former member of the Hornell Eagles Club and VFW.

Simply put, Alvy had a passion for politics. He served as assessor for the Town of South Dansville and also the Village of Wayland. He could “talk politics” with just about anybody and discuss any topic, including up-coming elections, with a deep knowledge and heart-felt conviction. In the 1970’s Alvy was instrumental in the formation of the Concerned Citizen’s Party of South Dansville.

Alvy was married on November 3, 1946 to the former Mary Chase who died in 2001. He was also preceded in death by his son, Allan Lucas who died in 2013; his granddaughter, Shauna Lucas; and several brothers & sisters.

Surviving are 1 son, Charles (Carol) Lucas of Jasper; 1 daughter, Mary Ellen (Jason) Davis of Lyndhurst, VA; 1 sister, Barbara Dunlap of Omaha, NB; 1 brother, Richard Lucas of Bloomfield, NY; his daughter-in-law, Sally Lucas of Corning; 11grand-children, 12 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews & cousins.

The family of Alvy J. Lucas will receive friends on Saturday from 12:00 (noon) until 1:00 PM at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell, NY. A Memorial Service with full military honors will be held at the conclusion of calling hours at 1:00 PM with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating. Final interment will be in Fremont Cemetery.

Alvy’s family request that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, 16 Beech St., Johnson City, NY 13790. Memorial forms will be available at the Dagon Funeral Home or click here to print a form.

A special “Thank-You” from Alvy’s family to all of the wonderful doctors, nurses & staff at Hornell Gardens for making his final days comfortable . Your dedication and professionalism are indeed greatly appreciated.

In recognition of Alvy’s service to his country, the American Flag at the Dagon Funeral Home will be flown at half-staff.
