From Canisteo-Greenwood School Superintendent Tom Crook:
The mascot committee on Monday night recommended to the Board to change the mascot. Their recommendation was based on the survey results of 80% of the 107 responses were in favor of a change, the feedback from the community meetings, and the State Education memo mandating that all districts in NY commit to changing Native American themed mascots by the end of this school year.
The Board asked to have the committee come back in January to recommend a process to assist with the change. I will be looking at what a uniform replacement cost may be, as well as other rebranding costs associated with a change.
In addition, no Board action was taken. We are waiting for more guidance from the state on what the timeline requirements will be of the district.
