Canisteo Mayor Asks Assemblyman Sempolinski For Help, In Paying For A Study

May 13, 2026

STATEMENT FROM ASSEMBLYMAN JOE SEMPOLINSKI: “In many communities throughout Upstate New York there is a push from FEMA to redo flood mapping. Which would then mean that levees need to be certified which is incredibly expensive. If this needs to be done the state and federal government should pick up a lot of the cost, because smaller towns don’t have the money for recertification studies. I have reached out to the governor to ask her to make funding available to all communities that are put in this position. This is fundamentally a federal issue but because municipalities are involved the governor should step and in and provide funding.”

Editors Note: This statement from Sempolinski was made after Wlea reached out to him. The reason we contacted the assemblyman is because Canisteo Village Mayor Rich McInroy announced last night, that the Canisteo Village Hall had asked Sempolinski about how the US Army Corps of Engineers was asking the Village to pay $550,000 to the Corps Of Engineers to do a study on the levee in Canisteo, for flood prevention reasons.
