On Monday night, the Steuben County Industrial Development Agency held a meeting at 6pm, about the proposed Canisteo wind project. County IDA Director Jamie Johnson and Mayor John Buckley noted that the Hornell part of that project would be the transmission lines going to the South Hornell substation on Route 36. The transmission lines will go from the ZY tower road to East Avenue Extension to Route 36 to the substation.
Hornell Alderman Kevin Valentine asked if Hornell would have to put any money into the wind project. The answer from Mayor Buckley was, no. Alderman David sutfin asked if the wind turbines life span is 20 years, Steuben County IDA Director Jamie Johnson said, yes. Alderman Jim Bassage asked, “What’s in it for Hornell?” The answer: in year one of the wind project, Hornell gets $5700, and it increases from there, it tops out at $11,000 by year 20. Hornell is slated to receive less money than Canisteo, because Hornell will only have transmission lines and not wind turbines.
Alderman Sutfin also asked if the project would work without the subsidies, Johnson said he could not comment on other govt subsidies besides the county subsidies. Johnson also said that the county subsidies would be in the form of payment in leiu of taxes.
