Dodgers Beat Both Cortland And Syracuse

July 2, 2021

The Hornell Dodgers swept a two-site doubleheader on Thursday. The Dodgers defeated the Syracuse Spartans 5-4 in the afternoon and then shutout the Cortland Crush 1-0 in the evening. Both games were the completion of earlier games that were suspended due to thunderstorms.

The Dodgers entered the game in Syracuse trailing 1-0 in the top of the 1st when play resumed today. Brody Burdett (Alfred State) got out of the top of the 1st and the Dodgers were able to plate a pair of runs in the 1st to take the lead. Hornell got on the board on a dropped 3rd strike that scored Wade Kelly (Coastal Carolina) and Aaron Mann (Drury) followed with a RBI single.

Jack McDonald (Wilmington) made it a 3-1 advantage with a RBI double in the 3rd.

The Spartans scored a single run in the 4th and 5th to tie it up but Brenden O’Donnell (Rider) hit a two-run homer in the bottom half of the inning to give the Dodgers the lead for good.

Syracuse scored an unearned run in the 7th but could not score the equalizer. Matteo Avallone (Alfred State) pitched the final three innings to earn the victory.

In the nightcap, Alex Foppe (Webster) threw a three-hit shutout. He walked three and struck out 12 (including striking out the side in the 7th).

The lone run of the game came nearly two weeks ago when the game started prior to a thunderstorm. Chris Penna (Rhodes) singled home Kelly in the 1st to make it 1-0 Hornell prior to the suspension of the game because of foul weather.

Hornell is now 13-5-1 on the season and is 9-0-1 in their last 10 games. They now have 27 points on the season which is tied with the Spartans for most in the league and is one ahead of Mansfield in the Western Division standings.

The Dodgers travel to Kerr Pegula Athletic Complex on Friday for a 7 p.m. contest with the Genesee Rapids
