Dodgers Split Double Header With Rochester

July 21, 2021

The Hornell Dodgers split an afternoon doubleheader vs. the Rochester Ridegmen on Wednesday. They won the opener 7-1 and fell in the nightcap 12-7.

Mitch Daniels (Webster) drew a lead off walk in the opener and came around to score on a wild pitch to give Hornell the early lead.

In the 2nd, Ryan Hill (Monroe CC/Mercyhurst) hit a RBI single, Matt Staker (Webster) hit a sac fly, and Jack McDonald (Wilmington) drew a bases loaded walk to make it 4-0.

The Ridgemen got an inside the park homer in the 3rd by Derek Wood but would not plate another run in the game.

In the 5th, the Dodgers took advantage of three Ridgemen errors to plate three more runs. Staker lifted his second sac fly of the game.

Alec Appelbaum (Camden County CC) threw a complete game four hitter. He allowed just one run while walking three and striking out eight.

Levi Hall (Webster) was the lone Dodger with multiple hits finishing 2 for 4.

The Ridgemen jumped ahead early in the nightcap and didn’t let the Dodgers fully complete a comeback. Rochester scored three in the 1st and four in the 2nd before Hornell got on the board. Aaron Mann (Drury) hit a RBI triple and scored on a RBI single by Matteo Avallone (Alfred State).

Rochester scored four more times in the bottom of the 3rd but Mann got those runs back when he hit a grand slam to make it 11-6.

In the 5th, Jordyn Smith (Grambling) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded but the Dodgers couldn’t get any closer as they stranded the bases loaded. In the 6th, Hornell loaded the bases again with one out but the Ridgemen induced an inning ending double play.

Rochester scored an insurance run in the 6th and retired the Dodgers in order in the 7th to seal the victory.

Mann was the lone Dodger with multiple hits finishing 2 for 4 with 5 RBI.

The Dodgers have now won nine of their last ten games and are 26-10-1 on the year.

Hornell is back on the diamond tomorrow for another doubleheader. They are slated to head to Mansfield for a 2:30 p.m. tilt with the Destroyers.
