Ellsworth C. Henry, formerly of Canisteo

CANISTEO: Ellsworth C. Henry, 95, formerly of Taylor St. passed away Tuesday (July 31, 2018) at the Bath VA Medical Center where he had resided since 2015.

Ellsworth was born March 14, 1923 in the town of Hartsville to the late Winfred L. and Ethel M. (Norton) Henry. On September 21, 1946 in Elmira, he married the former Madolynne J. Hill who predeceased him in August of 2006.

Ellsworth was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving our country proudly and honorably during WWII, from 1943-45 in the 101st Airborne which landed in Normandy. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star and 3 Purple Heart medals.

In his early years he was part owner of Isman Chrysler Plymouth in Hornell. He was part owner of Ell’s & Rod’s Service Station in Canisteo for many years and after the sale of the service station, he continued to work for the U.S. Postal Service picking-up and delivering mail to area post offices.

Ellsworth’s was a member of Canisteo Morning Star Lodge #65 F&AM, a former member of the Canisteo Village Board and a past Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop #14 in Canisteo.

Ellsworth is survived by a daughter, Cynthia Matacale (David Littlejohn) of Nunda and daughter-in-law, Marilyn Henry, 5 Grandchildren Bryan Matacale, Aaron (Joanna) Henry, Allison (Dan) Post, Crystal Travis and Ashley Elder Marshall, 12 great grandchildren, Jonathan, Bradley, Jossalyn and Jaelin Henry, Miriam, David, Amelia and A.J. Post, Dominik and Trenton Travis, Peyton and Malachi Marshall as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Ellsworth was predeceased by a son, Ronald Henry and a brother, Stanley Henry; and three sisters, Luna Munson, Pearl Simons and Eileen Henry.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 pm Saturday (Aug. 11, 2018) at the Faith Independent Baptist Church, 10 Maple Street in Canisteo, where a memorial service with military honors will take place immediately following calling hours at 4:00 pm. Burial will be in Hartsville Center Cemetery, Hartsville, N.Y.
