The Hornell Steamers will take the field for the first time on June 6 when the team battles the Olean Oilers to open up the 2022 NYCBL season at Maple City Park. The nickname Steamers replaces the recently retired Dodgers moniker.
Hornell Steamers general manager Paul Welker is excited to usher in the new name. “The board of directors wanted to once again honor the history of Hornell with our new name. The Dodgers name was a salute to the 1950’s PONY League teams and the name Steamers is a salute to the area’s rich railroad history. We are excited to keep the same colors and the same H that we have used since the team started in 1994.”
Arkport resident Kolby Avery worked with the board on the design. “Kolby was amazing. We knew we wanted our name to be railroad themed and we went through a few variations. He worked through our suggestions and came up with the final design. We are very thankful for his hard work.”
Welker also wanted to acknowledge former Dodger Gaetan Sinisgalli who started the logo design a few years ago. “The school year after Gaetan played in Hornell he worked on a railroad design for a new logo for a school project. COVID slowed down the name change but Gaetan’s original ideas put us on the right track to the final design and name.”
Fans will hear train whistles when the team scores, purchase tickets at the ticket booth, and buy concessions at the dining cart. “We are excited to brand the team around the railroad theme.”
“There is a lot of work to still do and we can’t wait to see the community at the ballpark this summer.”
Season tickets will be available soon, sponsorship opportunities are available, and the team is looking for host families. Please contact Paul Welker (firstname.lastname@example.org) for more information.
