FROM REP. NICK LANGWORTHY: This week, I’d like to put a spotlight on the Southern Tier and how government and the private sector should be working together to build a strong, resilient economy built to last. The Southern Tier has the people, work ethic, and entrepreneurial spirit to thrive. What it needs is a government that helps create the conditions for success, gets out of the way, and lets American businesses and workers do what they do best. Our state policies continue to be a barrier to growth, but I am working hard at the federal level and with local partners wherever we can overcome those challenges. This week, I saw that approach in action on two fronts. In Jamestown, I announced a $1 million EPA grant to help clean up former industrial sites along the Chadakoin River, an important step toward the city’s Core to Shore vision for economic development and waterfront revitalization. And at RAND Precision Machining, I met with local manufacturers to discuss strengthening American manufacturing and putting more money back in workers’ pockets through the elimination of taxes on overtime. Individually, these initiatives may seem like incremental steps. But when we pursue them in communities across the Southern Tier, they add up to a bigger, forward-looking vision– one that attracts private investment, creates good-paying jobs, helps families put down roots, and gives the next generation a reason to build their future right here at home.

That is what economic development should look like. Government should invest in the infrastructure, address barriers to growth, and establish a climate where businesses can compete and expand. Then the private sector can do what it does best: invest, innovate, create jobs, and grow our local economy. For too long, the failed approach of government trying to pick winners and losers and dictate what the jobs should be and where they should go has left too many Southern Tier communities feeling forgotten. We need a different path, one that puts workers and families first, rewards hard work, and gives local businesses the opportunity to succeed. Our goal is not novel, but it does take leadership with the determination, vision and backbone to make it a reality. I’m grateful to all of my partners in government at the local level, along with our great businesses who share in the commitment to build a stronger economy for the Southern Tier, one investment and opportunity at a time.

Sincerely,

Rep. Nicholas A. Langworthy
Member of Congress
