Madeline V. Kerr, formerly of Hornell

HORNELL/DEBARY, Fla.-Madeline V. Kerr, 76, of Debary, Fla., formerly of Hornell, passed away Saturday (Dec. 26, 2015) at the Halifax Health Hospice in Orange City, Fla., after a long illness.

 

Born in Dansville on Nov. 8, 1939, she was a daughter of the late Fredrick M. Wicks and Charlotte Dennis. She was married in Hornell on July 2, 1962 to Thomas D. Kerr, Jr., who predeceased her on July 17, 1987 after 25 years of marriage. Besides her parents and husband she was also predeceased by her infant sister, Virginia Allen and her two infant brothers, Carl Allen and David Mulhollen.

 

A graduate of Canisteo Central School, Madeline also graduated from the St. James Mercy Hospital School of Radiologic Science in Hornell and was employed at one time in the X-ray Department of St. James Mercy Hospital. Later, she was employed for 17 years as the secretary for Dr. William Peterson in Hornell.

 

Madeline was a long time active member of the United Presbyterian Church in Hornell where she served as a Deacon from 1994-2000 and as an Elder from 2002-2008. She was also a life member and past president of the Cpl. J.J. Mooney V.F.W. Post No. 2250 Auxiliary in Hornell.

 

A loving mother and grandmother, she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Madeline loved animals and also enjoyed assisting her friends and neighbors whenever she was able and would often provide transportation for them.

 

She has resided in Debary, Fla. since 2007 and served as a volunteer for the Volusia County Sheriff’s Department Citizen Observer Program (C.O.P.)

 

Her loving family includes her three daughters, Veronica “Vickie” (William) Purcell of Hornell, Celeste “Cindy” Kerr of Hornell and Kristen Tovar of Debary, Fla.; her six grandchildren, Kale Flynn, Meghan Payne, Corey Knapp, Andrew Purcell, Thomas Purcell and Andrea Tovar; also her three great-grandchildren, Trevor Payne, Nathaniel Gross and Charlotte Gross.

 

The Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell is honored to serve the family of Madeline V. Kerr.

 

Calling hours are noon-2 p.m. Saturday at the Davidson Memorial Chapel of the United Presbyterian Church in Hornell, where the V.F.W. Auxiliary will conduct a ritual at 1:45 p.m. Saturday and a funeral and committal service will follow at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Katherine Griffis officiating. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, Canisteo.

 

After the funeral services everyone is cordially invited to attend a luncheon at the Hornell V.F.W. Post, 245 Canisteo St.
