CANISTEO: Marcelene M. Stewart, 71, of Windfall Rd. passed away unexpectedly Saturday (June 7, 2014) at her home.

Marcelene was born July 10, 1942, in North Hornell, to Mathew “Mattie” and Marie (McDaniels) Pierce. On July 1, 1961 in Wallace she married Edward Stewart who survives and resides in Canisteo. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by a son Christopher Stewart in February of 2014, two brothers, Gerald and Richard Pierce, two sisters, Marlene Scott and Yvonne Campbell and “George” the family Labrador who was very much a part of her family.

Marcelene was a life long resident of Canisteo and had attended Canisteo Central School. She was a life member and past President of the Canisteo American Legion Women’s Auxiliary where she was very active and instrumental in the many Auxiliary activities. She was also a life member of the Avoca American Legion’s Women’s Auxiliary.

In addition to her husband of 52 years, Edward Stewart of Canisteo, Marcelene is survived by a son Michael Stewart of Canisteo, a granddaughter, Grace Stewart and daughter-in-law, Corinne Stewart both of Canisteo, two brothers: Duane “Coz” Pierce of Fayetteville, TN, and Clement Pierce of Canisteo, four sisters: Sharlene Thompson, Deanne Edell, Connie Frook and Denise (Michael) Schaumberg all of Canisteo. She is also survived by a sister-in-law Beverly Pierce and very dear friend Peg Hudacsek both of Canisteo and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 1-3 and 6-8 PM Tuesday, at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St. in Canisteo where funeral and committal services will take place Wednesday at 11:00 AM with the Rev. Beverly Welch officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Canisteo.
