Nancy E. McMindes, of Canisteo

CANISTEO: Nancy E. McMindes, 86, of Russell Street, passed away Thursday (Aug. 23, 2018) at Rochester General Hospital following a brief illness.

Nancy was born December 8, 1931 in Hornell to the late Elmer and Reba (Hornburg) Stocum. On June 24, 1950, in Arkport, she married Paul L. McMindes who predeceased her in March of 1998. She was also predeceased by a daughter Wanda McMindes in July of 1980, a son Michael McMindes in April of 2017, daughter-in-law Susanne McMindes in February of 2013, as well as four brothers and three sisters.

Nancy was well known as the Canisteo Town clerk and registrar who for 45 years issued hunting licenses, dog licenses, collected taxes, kept the town board abreast of important issues, was ever present at election time, and with a bit of heart felt emotion retired in 2014.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Canisteo where she was very active in church functions and activities. She was an avid collector with her home filled with many dolls, bells, teacups and elephants. She also enjoyed needle working along with her collecting. Nancy greatest joy was her grandchildren. Her time spent with them was very dear to her and her door was always open. She was also very fond of her dog “Wimpy” who’s
companionship was very comforting.

Nancy is survived by three sons, Mark McMindes and John (Sandra) McMindes of Canisteo, Jeffrey (Janis) McMindes of Avon. 7 grandchildren, Matthew and Michael McMindes, Michele (Chris) Worth, Steven (Theresa) McMindes, Nichole (Derrick) Hudson, Kristopher and Sharayah McMindes and 15 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5-8 pm Tuesday at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St. in Canisteo, where funeral services will take place Wednesday at 11:00 am with Pastor James Patton officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Canisteo.

Memorial contributions in Nancy’s name may be made to either the American Cancer Society or to the First Baptist Church, 45 Greenwood. St. Canisteo, N.Y. 14823.
