From The New York State Teachers Union:
NYSUT is joining with its national affiliate, AFT, in a Day of Action on Tuesday, March 4 with a rally at the New York state Capitol. The rally comes at a pivotal moment, as the Trump administration signals policies that would eliminate essential support and protections for students, increase class sizes and divert funds away from local school districts.
Across the nation, educators, students and activists are holding more than 100 “Protect Our Kids” Day of Action events to fight back against cruel cuts to public education.
WHO: Melinda Person, NYSUT president
Randi Weingarten, AFT president
Betty Rosa, NYS Commissioner of Education
Mario Cilento, NYS AFL-CIO President
Wayne Spence, PEF President
Kyle Belokopitsky, PTA Executive Director
State and local elected officials
State and local school officials
Community and civils rights advocates
WHERE: New York state Capitol, West Capitol Park
WHEN: 12 p.m., Tuesday, March 4
WHY: Students across New York benefit from programs run by the Department of Education, especially lower-income students in rural, suburban and urban communities; students who qualify for federal grants or loans to receive career training or attend 2- and 4-year colleges; and students who require special education programs.
The proposed cuts would mean New York students would lose vital support systems and opportunities, including $1.5 billion in Title I funds that ensure quality education services for low-income students across the state and roughly $1 billion that goes to support services for half a million students with disabilities.
