Samuel W. Marts, of Canisteo

Canisteo-Samuel W. Marts, 91, of 37 Depot Street, passed away Sunday evening (January 18, 2015) at his home.

 

Born in Woodhull, December 8, 1923, the son of Daniel and Alice Stroud Marts, he had resided in Canisteo most of his life. Sam was employed as an electrician for the former Erie and Erie Lakawanna Railroads as well as Conrail prior to his retirement. He served his country as a member of the United States Army during WW-2 and was a purple heart recipient.

 

Sam was a member and past commander of the Canisteo American Legion Post #846, a member of the Post’s color guards, the Eagles Club in Addison, AMVETS and the Association as well as the Hornell Moose Lodge and was a life member of the Hornell VFW.

 

He was predeceased by his parents, his daughter Linda Truax and his brother Fred Marts.

 

He is survived by his wife, Althea Vanskiver Marts, to whom he was married January 26, 1945, his daughter, Autumn (Donald ) Benedict of Florida, two sons, Richard (Brenda) Marts of Alabama, and Thomas (Martine) Marts of Canisteo, 9 grandchildren, 19 Great Grandchildren and 5 Great Great Grandchildren.

The family will be present to receive friends at the Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 6 Spruce St., Canisteo on Friday from 5-7 PM where the Canisteo American Legion Post will conduct a memorial service at 7 PM. Funeral services will follow at 7 :15 PM with Rev Donald Maynard officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Canisteo.
