The Hornell Steamers won a tight 3-2 decision over the Dansville Gliders on Wednesday afternoon. Great pitching and timely hitting led Steamers to their second win of the young campaign (2-3).
Hornell got on the board in the 3rd when Devin Mersmann (Alfred State) drew a walk and Cooper Dailey (Delgado CC) was hit by a pitch to set up Elijah Nichols (Arkansas State). Nichols lifted a double down the left field line to plate two.
Braden McLin (Louisiana Christian) allowed just one hit and one walk in five innings of work and the game remained 2-0 until the 8th inning.
In the 8th, Cameron Abele hit a ground-rule double and scored on a RBi single by Aidan Dilitz.
Nichols delivered an insurance run in the 9th when he singled home Markus Brehm (Finger Lakes CC) who had singled to lead off the inning.
Dansville didn’t go quietly as Lane Griggs hit a solo homer and the Glider loaded the bases with two outs on a walk, an error, and a hit batter before Cowan Alfonso (Louisiana Christian) induced a groundout to end the game.
Nichols finished 2 for 4 with 3 RBI while Brody Langlotz (Gulf Coast CC) was 2 for 5. McLin earned the win, Wes Carter (Webster) allowed one run on three hits in 2.2 innings, and Alfonso earned the save by getting the last four outs.
Dilitz was the lone Glider (3-2) with multiple hits finishing 2 for 4. Ethan Pollack allowed just one hit in 3.2 innings of relief work.
Hornell and Dansville collide again on Thursday morning at Maple City Park. Students from Hornell, Arkport, and Canisteo Greenwood will be in attendance for the annual Kids Day game.
