BATH, NY – The Steuben County Board of Elections has issued the following statement:
With a larger than normal turnout expected for the Presidential Primary April 19, the Steuben County Board of Elections warns voters they may need to wait in line a little longer than they normally do.
Steuben election officials said only the 41,878 voters currently registered in the Democratic and Republican party are eligible to vote in the Presidential Primary. Those enrolled in other parties may not vote in the Republican or Democratic party primaries.
Voters who changed their party enrollment after Oct. 9, 2015 need to be aware the new party enrollment will not take effect until seven days after the November 2016 general election. For example, a registered Democrat switching to the Republican Party after Oct. 9 may not vote as a Republican in the Presidential Party, but may still vote as a Democrat.
Elections commissioners urge voters unsure about their registration, party enrollment or poll site to call the county Board of Elections at (607) 664-2263 before April 19.
Voters also can visit the county Board of Election website at steubencony.org/boe to view the ballots or look up their registration.
Anyone in need of an absentee ballot for the Presidential Primary should go the board of elections office, on the main floor of the Steuben County Office Building, 3 Pulteney Square, Bath, or call the office at (607) 664-2263 for more instructions.
Elections officials also recommend Presidential Primary voters bring a form of identification (although not required), since it helps inspectors speed up the process.
