William E. McCourt, of Canisteo

CANISTEO-William E. McCourt, 71, passed away comfortably, in the presence of his loving family, at his home on County Route 119, and went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ (John 14:6) after a short battle with cancer.

Born in Hornell on Sept. 23, 1944, he was the son of the late William E. and Esther (Howland) McCourt. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his grandson, Quinten McCourt.

A lifelong resident of the Canisteo area, Bill was a graduate of Canisteo Central School, class of 1963.

He was employed by Dresser-Rand in Painted Post before he began his career with Canisteo Central School in 1971and retired after 31 years of employment in 2002 as head mechanic.

Bill was a member of the First Baptist Church in Adrian and loved to hunt and also enjoyed auto racing, gardening, “puttering” in his garage and his morning coffee with friends. He will be remembered for being a great family man who cherished the time he spent with his family.

His loving family includes his “bride” of nearly 49 years, the former Shirley Quick, who he married in Canisteo on June 24, 1967; his son, Bill (Tina) McCourt of Canisteo; his daughter, Jill (Steve) Whitney of Wellsville; his four grandchildren, Julia and Ashley Whitney of Wellsville, Catherine McCourt (Brandon) Owen and Carrie McCourt, all of Jasper; his two-great-grandchildren, Landon and Oliver; his two sisters, Billie (Larry) Creeley of Canisteo and Patricia (Leonard) Graves of Canandaigua; also his nieces and nephews.

The Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc. in Hornell is honored to serve the family of William E. McCourt.

To honor his wishes there were no calling hours and a private funeral service was held at the convenience of his family at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell, with Pastor Norm Culver of the First Baptist Church in Adrian officiating. Committal services and interment followed at the Bennetts Creek Cemetery, Canisteo.
