Suspect In The Bath Shootout/Standoff Case, Has Been Sentenced

January 9, 2025

Judge Chauncey Watches has sentenced Larry Schoonover, 51, of Bath, to 35 years to life for the 12 counts of attempted murder of a police officer, one count for each officer shot at, and a consecutive term of 20 years, for the criminal use of a firearm charge.

Schoonover was in a shootout with State Police, the Steuben County Sheriff’s Department and Bath Police, in August 2023. From Steuben County D.A. Brooks Baker: “This is a man who has engaged in similar conduct in the past at a lesser level. The system gave him every possible tool to prevent this from happening and he tried to kill brave men and women from the state policed, the sheriff’s office and bath village police as they tried to protect his neighbors, and Larry Schoonover himself, from harm. The only way to protect the community and those who help protect it, is to remove Larry Schoonover for a very long time and send a message that this type of conduct simpely will not be tolerated and today that happened – justice happened,” Baker said,
