Suspicious Tax Refund Claims Caught

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo says the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance stopped more than 239,000 suspicious refund claims during the income tax season. As a result, the Department saved taxpayers $400 million—an increase of 18 percent over the same time period last year.

Since its inception in 2003, the business analytics program has saved New York State taxpayers nearly $4 billion. The system uses predictive analysis and rules to determine when to process a refund request and when to set it aside for further review.
